In November 2103 I found myself along with Pastora Myra Torres in Porta Plata Dominican Republic for a 9 day outreach. Our format is to present the gospel and show the love of Jesus through a humanitarian outreach. This outreach was done as a joint effort with a church in Canada.
Houses here are most often debris structures. Termites being forever prevalent in the tropic climate. The inadequate structures don't last. This house made of old pallet lumber was ready for collapse. In fact in the demolition stage four men pushed it over. That was our project: build a new home for the residents, a single mom with four children. Two of her children are twins in wheel chairs. The neighborhood joined in this process complete with the days meal.
The meal was quiet. Unique scrap lumber was gathered and with some cinder block. The make shift kitchen was complete. A hogs head was quartered with a machete and thrown into a pot of water to simmer along with unknown spices. The rice came later. I blessed mine and ate.
Myra and I provided a commode and the concrete for building the house. Two ladies mixed all of the concrete. These girls worked! For the most part we just supervised leaving the labor to the neighborhood.
This was a difficult process for me. I am more of a hands on type of guy. This is a different world and the construction process is primitive.
